Hold the Salt!
Salt and deicers do not chemically react with hardened concrete. They do, however, lower the freezing point of water, attract moisture and increase the pressure on concrete due to the water that seeps inside and then freezes. Frozen water creates pressure within the concrete which causes scaling and spalling. For this reason we recommend not using salt or deicers but rather sand or some type of anti-skid (such as fine gravel) for traction, especially if your concrete is less than 1 year old.
